Understanding Verrucas or Plantar Warts
Verrucas, also known as plantar warts, are small, rough growths that typically appear on the soles of the feet. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are highly contagious. Here's more about them:
- Verrucas often have a rough, grainy texture and may appear flat or slightly raised.
- They can range in size from a pinhead to about the size of a pea.
- Verrucas may have tiny black dots in the center, which are small blood vessels that have clotted.
- Unlike warts that commonly appear on the hands and fingers, verrucas develop on the weight-bearing areas of the feet, such as the heels or balls of the feet.
- Due to the pressure from walking or standing, verrucas may grow inward, causing pain or discomfort.
